Shopify rolls out market-driven shipping, split-shipment changes, and new peak-season fulfillment tools

Source: Shopify

Shopify opened merchant opt-in for market-driven shipping on October 1, 2026 and is beginning a phased transition toward fulfillment-aware checkout behavior. The broader 2026 peak-season release also adds or expands split-shipping visibility, batch fulfillment, scan-to-verify workflows, product-dimension logic, U.S. UPS return labels, and proof-of-delivery photos for supported carriers.

What changed

  • Starting October 1, 2026, Shopify merchants can opt in to market-driven shipping, which organizes shipping options around markets instead of requiring shipping logic to be managed only around products and locations.
  • When more than one rate matches inside a shipping option, Shopify says checkout uses the highest matching rate rather than simply adding all matching rates together.
  • Shopify is phasing in split-shipping behavior that shows shoppers how many shipments to expect when an order must be fulfilled from different locations, profiles, preorder timing, or other fulfillment paths.
  • Shopify's 2026 peak-season fulfillment release also includes batch workflows for up to 250 orders, scan-to-verify during picking and packing, product-dimension data for package selection and rating, UPS return labels purchased in Shopify Admin for U.S. merchants, and proof-of-delivery photos for supported carriers.
  • The platform changes make checkout and order orchestration more fulfillment-aware, but they do not remove the physical warehouse decisions behind inventory placement, cartonization, carrier selection, oversized handling, returns, and multi-channel stock allocation.

What shippers and 3PL operators should change

  1. Audit Shopify Markets, shipping profiles, warehouse locations, and routing logic together; checkout settings should reflect the inventory nodes that can actually fulfill the order.
  2. Test mixed carts that contain oversized products, products stored at different locations, preorder items, or SKUs with different shipping profiles so split shipments and customer-facing rates match the real warehouse plan.
  3. Keep packed dimensions current for large products because package selection, parcel economics, and the decision to use parcel versus LTL depend on operational dimensions rather than merchandising dimensions.
  4. For DTC brands using Broadi, Shopify can remain the commerce and order-control layer while Broadi executes the physical work: shared inventory storage, pick and pack, oversized handling, carrier or LTL routing, tracking handoff, and returns processing from the same stock pool used by other channels.
  5. Use the new Shopify controls to reduce checkout friction, but keep channel-independent inventory rules so Shopify demand does not drain stock reserved for Amazon, Walmart, Wayfair, TikTok Shop, retail, or B2B orders.
