Amazon expands Global Warehousing & Distribution and its Global Inventory Pool model
Amazon is expanding Global Warehousing & Distribution (GWD), an origin-side bulk storage and cross-border replenishment model that lets sellers hold inventory closer to manufacturing and release it into destination markets as demand develops. Amazon says GWD storage in China can cost up to 45% less than U.S. AWD storage and, when paired with Amazon Global Logistics, can move inventory to U.S. FBA fulfillment centers up to seven days faster than comparable replenishment flows.

- Amazon is moving more bulk inventory storage upstream toward manufacturing origin through Global Warehousing & Distribution.
- Amazon says GWD inventory can replenish into U.S. FBA through Amazon Global Logistics and can be managed with automated or manual replenishment.
- Amazon states GWD storage costs can be up to 45% lower than U.S. AWD storage for the covered program and that paired cross-border replenishment can reach U.S. fulfillment centers up to seven days faster.
- Amazon's broader Global Inventory Pool direction is designed to reduce the need to pre-commit inventory to each destination market before demand is clear.
What shippers and 3PL operators should change
- Separate origin-side bulk inventory, destination-market bulk inventory, FBA sellable inventory, and independent U.S. warehouse stock instead of treating GWD, AWD, FBA, and a 3PL as interchangeable.
- For China-origin inventory, compare GWD economics with the cost of importing earlier into the U.S., including duty timing, destination storage, replenishment speed, channel mix, and the operational work that still has to happen after the inventory reaches the U.S.
- For oversized, palletized, retail, Walmart, Wayfair, B2B, DTC, or returns-heavy inventory, keep a U.S. operating plan for the work that does not fit a pure Amazon replenishment path.
- Broadi can remain the U.S. operating node for receiving, FBA prep, pallet or LTL handling, marketplace routing, returns, and reserve inventory when those tasks sit outside the GWD-to-FBA flow.
